I found a nice plan in Canadian Home Workshop (Paul Allen) for these chairs. So I bought some Spanish Cedar (beautiful wood) and followed the plan almost to the letter and here is the result.
A unique aspect of these comfortable chairs is the offset of the front legs to make it easier to get up and out of the chair. Also the wood is 1″ thick (standard is 3/4″) with all screws plugged to give a very nice clean finish.
I chose Spanish Cedar because of its natural beauty and it is less expensive than Western Red Cedar. These chairs are available for $399 each and in pine at $325 each. For orders of 4 or more, I can reduce the price by 5% to 10%. Foot stools are also available for $99 each.
Complementary foot stools, tables, benches etc. can also be ordered in either spanish cedar or pine.
Using the plan and cutting list with a small modification I cut and prepared the components as shown below.
After assembly using exterior grade glue and screws, I applied 3 coats of Sikkens Cetol I …
Beautiful finish contrasted against the background of my unfinished cedar deck …
A couple of comments re the CHW plan … you will notice that one leg of the chair is recessed about 6 inches to make it easier to get up and out of the chairs. Also, the chair as dimensioned in the original plan will need to be enlarged for anyone that it is taller than about 5’10″ …
It certainly can bear 200+ pounds
