We use our fire place quite a lot and I just got tired of seeing the firewood lying beside or in front of it so I undertook a quick project to design and build a box to store the wood.

It is solid pine, with spaces between the rails to allow any damp wood to breathe a bit. It has a solid bottom and hinged lid. My wife did the stain and finish for me.

Our home in the country is quite private and so we do not have any window coverings. My wife wants some simple shutters for the guest bathroom. So I have started to experiment when I have some free shop time.

These are made of Spanish cedar with a single coat of Sikkens Cetol natural stain. The joinery is mortise and tenon with the tenons being on the stiles. I made the very simple panels using a 3/4″ straight bit so the panels would be flush with the frame. I shaped the top rails and also gently scored the panels to add a little character.

For my next version I will cut slits in the panels to allow more light..

The ones below are made of pine and the panels are made using my panel router bit set. I found these too tall, but otherwise would be suitable. Quite simple to make.

It is made of black walnut. Here are some pics showing how it is constructed …

The single drawer can be pulled open from either side. It required very precise work to ensure all table and drawer elements were square to achieve a good fit with minimal gaps.

I found a nice plan in Canadian Home Workshop (Paul Allen) for these chairs. So I bought some Spanish Cedar (beautiful wood) and followed the plan almost to the letter and here is the result.

A unique aspect of these comfortable chairs is the offset of the front legs to make it easier to get up and out of the chair. Also the wood is 1″ thick (standard is 3/4″) with all screws plugged to give a very nice clean finish.

I chose Spanish Cedar because of its natural beauty and it is less expensive than Western Red Cedar. These chairs are available for $399 each and in pine at $325 each. For orders of 4 or more, I can reduce the price by 5% to 10%. Foot stools are also available for $99 each.

Complementary foot stools, tables, benches etc. can also be ordered in either spanish cedar or pine.

Using the plan and cutting list with a small modification I cut and prepared the components as shown below.

After assembly using exterior grade glue and screws, I applied 3 coats of Sikkens Cetol I …

Beautiful finish contrasted against the background of my unfinished cedar deck …

A couple of comments re the CHW plan … you will notice that one leg of the chair is recessed about 6 inches to make it easier to get up and out of the chairs. Also, the chair as dimensioned in the original plan will need to be enlarged for anyone that it is taller than about 5’10″ …

It certainly can bear 200+ pounds …
