I designed this simple bookcase made of solid cherry … it can be made with any quality wood – mortise & tenon frame with floating panels. Oil stained and hand rubbed wax finish.

Here is a pic of the completed bookcase.

The 4 shelves are adjustable. There are floating panels on each side and 2 on the back. I used a “clover” milk paint to stain this a very light green which allows the grain (poplar) to show. It was sealed with 6 coats of tung oil.

Not visible in these photos is a carved Confederate flag on the bottom rail of each side. The bookcase is to house a collection of Civil War books.

Cherry Wardrobe

I finally got some pix of the cherry wardrobe I finished last year. So this post just to update on last year’s post which showed it under construction.

There are 8 dovetail drawers with floating cedar bottoms and 6 shelves with cedar panels floating within the cherry shelf frames.

I used the plans in a Quebec do-it-your-self publication exactly, including mitering the 4 corners of this piece and preparing the 2 piece cornice.

This is the first time I made such a crown moulding. Since I do not have a cutter/bit with the required profile, I used an old (extra) router bit from which I removed the bearing and filed down the bearing bolt head to create part of the profile .

Fire Wood Box

We use our fire place quite a lot and I just got tired of seeing the firewood lying beside or in front of it so I undertook a quick project to design and build a box to store the wood.

It is solid pine, with spaces between the rails to allow any damp wood to breathe a bit. It has a solid bottom and hinged lid. My wife did the stain and finish for me.

Here is the completed mobile Bar Cart made of solid maple.

The finish does not show well in these photos but is a combination of cherry, yellow and ebony stains with a wiping varnish seal.

This piece was personalized with a carved stylized monogram on the centre back panel.

Here are shop photos of a solid cherry wardrobe, nearly completed. The doors are stained, not yet varnished and almost ready to install.

The drawer and shelf bottoms, and back of the wardrobe are made of Spanish cedar panels ‘floating’ within the frame construction. This was done to minimize risk of the panels cracking because of seasonal changes in humidity and temperature.

I have been working on this project for several weeks … a wardrobe made of solid cherry, with cedar inserts for the back and bottoms of shelves and drawers. This project has presented many challenges since I work alone and it is simply very big (78″ high). The top is joined to the sides with dovetails, and the shelves and divider are joined using 1/4″ dado joints. The cedar back is semi-floating, glued and screwed on the side edges only so that any expansion will be toward the centre which has a 1/4 inch of play.

I am now working on the drawers and doors, soon to be installed.

Update on Chess Table

I recently applied the finish on my chess table. Here is how it looks. Made of solid black walnut with inlaid walnut and maple veneers for the chess squares. I invested 150 hours to completion.

An earlier post shows some of the steps in its construction.
