About The Site

Hi Folks, After 36 years in the IT industry, I have retired (almost) and taken up the craft of making quality furniture and have set up this site to chronicle and share my experiences.

Completed Computer Desk

After some final adjustments for the drawers and the cabinet door I completed the assembly by installing the cabinet tops.  Here are some pix of the completed project.

I still need to make the shelf unit to sit on the desk top … later, my dear wife wants a pharmacy for the downstairs bathroom …

Computer Desk – Cabinet Tops

Installing cabinet top

Installing Drawers

I chose 2 different types of sliders, heavier duty for the file drawer and lighter sliders typical for kitchen drawers for the other.
After measuring for the file drawer, installation was relatively simple. The smaller drawer however, had two problems:
1) The screws to mount the slider on the drawer actually had to extend into the floating [...]

Preparing Cabinet Drawers

I mentioned previously that I did not have a detailed plan but had drawn some sketches for the computer desk. I was originally going to install the drawers as I had done in all my previous pieces, with wood slides with mortise and tenons to fit within the interior of the cabinet frame. After thinking [...]

Computer Desk – Preparing Cabinet Door 2

After the rails and stiles have been planed to final thickness and cut to final length and width and they have been oriented and marked for their position in the cabinet door, the rail ends are routed first, face side down as below …

Because the inside surface of the door will fit within the opening [...]

Computer Desk – Sanding and staining

My favorite task is sanding … NOT!!! … but it is essential for the best final result. I have found often once I start to apply the finish that I have not sanded enough … machine marks can be easily missed in the shadows.

Because the panels will float in the frame, in order to [...]

Wood Furniture Work Shop – Atelier d’Ébénisterie

As I was taking the courses at l’Atelier d’Ébénisterie in St. Jerome, I decided that I would need to invest in my own shop … here are some photos … to make a long story short, it took quite a bit more time and effort to get operational than I would have expected.  For anyone [...]

Computer desk – Prepping Cabinet Door

Now that the cabinet frames have been dry assembled, I can prepare the door for one cabinet and the drawers for the other.
I am able to get accurate measurements from the assembled frame.  Making some allowance for waste I have cut and started to work the rough wood as shown in next series of shots, to make the rails, [...]

Computer Desk – side cabinets

You may have seen my prototype computer desk (flame finish) on another page … well I have been working on building the side cabinets (I wanted to make the desk modular, so that it could more easily fit into any room).  After the side cabinets (one with drawers, one with closed shelves), I expect to [...]

Computer Desk

This is a recently completed project … a modular computer desk,

… I drew up some basic sketches and then started to draft the details for the build … and the first piece above was a ‘proof of concept’ …  the other modules now completed include 2 side units, one with drawers and the other cabinet with shelves [...]
