Another completed project … for a home renovation as shown below.   Here is the assembled unit, with mirrors and staining/finishing as close a color match as I could create … in comparison to the original vanity cabinet door shown below.

Adirondack Chairs

July 16, 2008

I found a nice plan in Canadian Home Workshop (Paul Allen) for these chairs.  So I bought some Spanish Cedar (beautiful wood) and followed the plan almost to the letter and here is the result. A unique aspect of these comfortable chairs is the offset of the front legs to make it easier to get up [...]

Completed Pharmacy

July 16, 2008

I finished the pharmacy (medicine chest) with a first application of Tung oil, followed by an ebony oilbased stain.  The final finish was several coats of wiping varnish.    After I installed it, I realized it was too low, so I have to raise it a few inches … too tired today … the shelves were [...]

Bathroom Pharmacy

June 23, 2008

Just over 2 years ago, I built a sauna and bathroom in the basement of our new home.  I also finished the family room and built a wine cellar.         Since that time, my wife has asked me to upgrade some of the elements of the basement … for example, she wants me to replace [...]

Installing Drawers

May 27, 2008

I chose 2 different types of sliders, heavier duty for the file drawer and lighter sliders typical for kitchen drawers for the other. After measuring for the file drawer, installation was relatively simple. The smaller drawer however, had two problems: 1) The screws to mount the slider on the drawer actually had to extend into [...]

Computer Desk – Sanding and staining

May 15, 2008

My favorite task is sanding … NOT!!! … but it is essential for the best final result. I have found often once I start to apply the finish that I have not sanded enough … machine marks can be easily missed in the shadows. Because the panels will float in the frame, in order to [...]

Wood Furniture Work Shop – Atelier d’Ébénisterie

May 6, 2008

As I was taking the courses at l’Atelier d’Ébénisterie in St. Jerome, I decided that I would need to invest in my own shop … here are some photos … to make a long story short, it took quite a bit more time and effort to get operational than I would have expected.  For anyone thinking [...]

Computer desk – Prepping Cabinet Door

May 5, 2008

Now that the cabinet frames have been dry assembled, I can prepare the door for one cabinet and the drawers for the other.  I am able to get accurate measurements from the assembled frame.  Making some allowance for waste I have cut and started to work the rough wood as shown in next series of shots, to make the [...]
